Our family dachshund, Doomie, was diagnosed with intervertebral disc herniation (IVDH) causing spinal cord compression at the L5-L6 level. A left/right L5-L6 hemilaminectomy was performed on 09/18/2026 to remove the herniated disc material and decompress the spinal cord. Approximately 1 in 4 Dachshunds develop clinically significant IVDH. Despite surgical decompression, Doomie remained paraplegic and negative for deep pain sensation in the pelvic limbs post-operatively.
Days later Doomie experience myelomalacia, the progressive softening and deterioration of the spinal cord associated with altered blood supply following severe spinal cord injury. Because Doomie was deep-pain negative, he was at risk for this potentially fatal complication and less than a week later we had to make the hard decision to put him down.
Nothing could have prepared us for a $15k expense and losing our sweet boy at such a young age. We are remembering and honoring Doomie’s life with some merchandise, and 100% of proceeds will be donated directly to our family to help with the costs of the surgery.
